The Avatar team has finally began working on porting the Avatar ROM for the Galaxy S4 mini. For now there is only available a version for the LTE and 3G variants and nothing for I9192 users, unfortunately. Keep in mind that if a build becomes available it will immediatelly be posted here.

Avatar ROM is based off the CyanogenMod sources but brings more customization to your phone. With it's integrated Theme Chooser, you get access to tons of themes to make your phone look the way you want it. On top of that there are also some other features worth mentioning such as the Bazooka Launcher which is an extended version of CM's Trebuchet launcher, themeable boot animation, Weebo, and many more.

Being in nightly stage, it is bound to have some bugs included but from a quick look, the rom seems to be working just fine and according to some people's reports, the battery life is also decent.

For more information on features, you can check out the official AvatarROM.com website.

Search for "serrano" and you will get download links for both LTE and 3G.

Six months with the Galaxy S4 mini: Is it a good phone?

    $
    0
    0
On 5th August 2013, I bought this phone while it's off-contract price was still hot and I said to myself, this phone must be great. I kept the Galaxy S4 mini in my home for two and a half months without a SIM card placed inside it and have used it only for writing to this website and recording videos and later on began carrying it with me and using it everyday. Below are my thoughts on the device as someone who has owned it for half a year now.

As you all know, the Galaxy S4 mini is the little brother of Samsung's flagship smartphone for the year 2013, the Galaxy S4, so it is bound to have the exact same design in the front and the back. One of the first things that you will notice is its screen. I personally am not a fan of huge phones and I find this to be the perfect size for a smartphone as it can be easily used with one hand. The quality of the display is simply gorgeous. The color reproduction is amazing and it's stupendously bright. The only issue that I have with the display is the given resolution which unfortunately is not even HD but qHD and that can be an issue for certain situations such as watching YouTube videos in HD resolution.

The phone is quite slim with silver-colored bezels and looks very beautiful. But a huge problem for me is the back cover. It feels extremely slippery in my hands and no, they are not sweaty, it's just how the back cover of this phone feels like and that lead me to actually purchase a protective cover with a more rough feel in fear of dropping it some day. I think Samsung should try and look for some improvements on this matter in the future.

The phone comes with a Li-Ion 1900 mAh battery and is very durable for daily use. You can listen to music for hours and hours and barely a small percentage would drop. I mostly play games such as Hill Climb Racing, Angry Birds series, and the phone manages to stay on for a very long time, keeping me entertained. I can't say the same for internet browsing though, once you turn on that 3G and begin chatting or whatever else you do, it begins to drop quite fast. In some situations while browsing the web, this phone would  become quite hot that it could even scare you and make you put it aside for a bit, but that happens very rare (go figure).

The camera in my opinion is just amazing for a smartphone camera. The phone comes with two cameras, one front and one rear. The front camera surprisingly takes very nice quality photos and the rear camera is even better. Samsung has also provided us with some neat presets and of course, other customization settings in the pre-installed Camera application. It takes high quality photos especially with the HDR feature turned on and captures clear videos but one huge problem is the microphone. When I previewed my video, the audio was simply a disaster. It's very sensitive to noise generated from my hands while holding it and even small wind in the background can end up ruining the joy of watching your captured videos.

Let's see now, we are lastly gonna take a look at the specifications that this phone comes with. We are given a dual-core processor clocked at 1.7GHz and 1.5GB of RAM. That should be enough to be able to play high-end games, right? It definitely is. I took the effort to test some HD games on the phone and it manages to run them as smooth as butter. This takes me back to my statement above about heat, but that should be normal I guess as we're talking about 3D games here with high-quality graphics.

    Final conclusion
Specs wise, this phone is powerful and is definitely like a small computer that you carry on your pocket. The build quality is not that great, as I already mentioned above, it feels very slippery in the hands and what ruins this mostly for me is the fact that this phone came in the market here with the same price that the Galaxy S3 was being offered for, even a bit higher than it. I honestly don't have any complaints about this phone other than the above mentioned ones for its slippery feel, lack of HD resolution and awful audio quality on the videos.

So what are your thoughts about the Galaxy S4 mini? Is it a good phone or Samsung could have done better?

MK4 Kernel with USB OTG Support for Galaxy S4 mini Duos (GT-I9192)

A lot of people have been wondering if the Galaxy S4 mini supports USB OTG. Officially, it doesn't. We are are all pretty much upset about the fact that we do not get any USB OTG support with this phone, considering its high price, it's a shame to have this feature leftout.

A member from xda forums called sekil has built this stock kernel for the GT-I9192 and claims that it has USB OTG support. The kernel is based off the Galaxy S4 sources and it is the first to have USB OTG support for the Galaxy S4 mini.

But, there is a slight issue. The phone will not provide power for the connected gadget so you would need to use an external power supply or an OTG cable that comes with an additional power connector.

    Disclaimer:

The kernel still seems to be on a testing stage, so there is no warranty if all will go well. Please flash it and use it at your own risk! Neither the developer nor S4MiniArchive will be responsible for any damages caused to your phone. Flash strictly on GT-I9192 only (if you are planning to)!

    Download kernel - Click here.

    Installation:

    1. Download the zip file to your sdcard
    2. Power off your phone and boot into CWM Recovery
    3. Choose install zip
    4. Then choose zip from external sdcard
    5. Select the kernel zip file
    6. Choose Yes to confirm
    7. After installation is complete, go back and choose reboot system now.

Mercury Goospery Wallet Case Review for Galaxy S4 mini

After I received my latest order from TVC-Mall, I realized that by mistake I got S4 mini case, so I figured to write a short review about it anyway since it looks so damn cool! The one I received is this one.

    s4 mini wallet case

This is another example when you have very low expectations when something costs only $3.60, and once you take it out of the box it makes you scratch your head of how far they pushed the envelope this time. The case comes in a very cool transparent package, but it's not just cheap looks when you take it out of the box.

This is diary/wallet style case with a magnetic latch. It comes in bi-color design with bright lime/green inside and blue denim-looking exterior with green stitching.
I don't even have a phone to test it out, so I tried taking a lot of detailed pictures for you to get an up close view.

The inner case is soft TPU, and looks like it has a nice wrap around fitment for a full side/corner protection and even a lip around the screen. I assume all the cutouts for power/volume/camera/flash/speaker/headphone/mic/charger ports are aligned perfectly. The flip cover has two pockets for credit cards or driver license and another large vertical pocket for bills.

    s4 mini wallet case

Overall, I was very impressed with a quality and a finish, and for $3.60 - it's a steal considering some TPU cases by itself cost more than that. Plus, it comes in variety of different colors.

Safely Root Galaxy S4 mini without tripping the KNOX flag

If you have read about the consequences of ending up with KNOX Warranty Void: 0x1 and you are scared to try and root your Galaxy S4 mini or use tools such as Kingo, then here is another alternative method that is considered safer than any other. What if I told you that this method does not trigger the KNOX flag as well, but it just safely roots your Galaxy S4 mini. Sounds great, eh?

    sch-i435 knox

This safe root method was originally intended for the Galaxy S4 by k1mu from xda-developers forums but thanks to postal302 who has tested this on the Verizon S4 mini variant (SCH-I435), we can confirm that this safe root method is also working on the Galaxy S4 mini, and even on some other devices.

Also please be aware that this method does not unlock your bootloader making you able to install custom recoveries and roms, but just installs su, SuperSU, and the necessary support files to enable the root. If it were to do that, it would trip the KNOX flag and would lead to a void warranty.

According to postal302 and k1mu, it is confirmed to work on the following devices:
    • Verizon SCH-I435
    • GT-I9190
    • GT-I9192, MK4 (ML2 does not work)
    • GT-I9195 (some variants)

      Disclaimer:

Before you proceed to the rooting instructions below, please read this disclaimer:
S4MiniArchive and the developer are not be responsible for what you are doing to your phone. Even though this may be considered to be the safest method, anything could happen. You agree that you are doing this at your own risk.

      Prerequisites:

      • Make sure you have the USB Drivers installed on your computer.
      • Be sure to enable USB Debugging (Settings -> More -> Developer options).
      • Enable USB ADB access (After enabling USB Debugging from your settings, connect your phone to your computer while it is unlocked and wait for a popup to appear that should ask you if you allow the connection, select "Always allow from this computer" and then tap on OK).
      • Download the saferoot.zip file to your computer.

Safely rooting your Galaxy S4 Mini steps:

      1. Connect your Galaxy S4 mini to your computer (be sure you have followed the usb adb access step correctly from the prerequisites part) and leave it connected.
      2. Now extract the saferoot.zip file and you should get two files and one folder install.bat, install.sh and the folder called files.
      3. Run the file install.bat (It is recommended that your right-click and click Run as Administrator for Windows 7/8/8.1 users) and be patient while it roots your phone. After it is done, your phone should reboot and you should have all the necessary files installed to your system, plus the SuperSU app.
      4. To ensure everything went well, you may download the app called Root Checker and see if you have full root access.

      BAM ROM RC2 for Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini 3G and LTE (I9190 & I9195)

BAM ROM is yet another rom that aims to give its users the most comprehensive and feature heavy custom ROM experience. Based off Android 4.4.2 and built from the latest sources of CyanogenMod, AOKP, and Paranoid, this rom definitely delivers what it promises.

After using this rom for a few hours, I came to the conclusion that it is stable enough for daily use as pretty much all of the main functions (telephony, WiFi, mobile data, camera, music player) seem to be working just fine. Even the battery life doesn't seem too bad.

Along with the customization options that we get in the Settings, this rom also provides us with a special application developed by the BAM team called Android Tweaker 2. The app basically acts like a market for download tweaks and other kinds of customizations for your phone. Surprisingly, most of them seem to be working except for now the boot animation changer that doesn't seem to do anything. Let's not forget, this is still a RC (release candidate) build and it still might need some additional work being done, atleast for the Galaxy S4 mini build.

Carbon ROM (Android 4.4.2) for Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini 3G and LTE (I9190 & I9195)

You might remember Carbon Rom at Android version Jelly Bean. It's now time to try out the KitKat version of it. Huge thanks goes to to f4k from xda-developers forums who has started porting this unofficially for the Galaxy S4 mini. As usual, the rom for now is only available for 3G (I9190) and LTE (I9195) users.

Carbon Rom is another aftermarket firmware like CyanogenMod, AOKP, etc, based of the AOSP (Android Open Source Project). This unofficial build comes pretty light with a very low number of pre-installed applications. In terms of performance, it does well and everything else that I personally tried out appears to be working flawlessly.

There is only one slight problem that I stumbled upon and that is the preview quality of the video camera (happens only when shooting a video). The final result is great, it has that 1080p quality, but the preview while recording is bad which really shouldn't be that bothersome.

For a full list of features that the Carbon Rom offers, check out their page.

        Screenshots:

Download Carbon ROM - Click here.
        Download Gapps - Click here.

        Disclaimer:

This rom is strictly for the GT-I9195 (serranoltexx) and GT-I9190 (serrano3gxx) variants only. It is recommended that you do not install this on other devices. Please beware that not doing the installation steps properly, you may end up bricking your phone, so be sure to make a nandroid backup before installing this. S4MiniArchive and the developer(s) will not be responsible for your damaged phone.

        Installation:

        1. Download the rom zip file according to your model from the above download link to your sdcard (be sure to pick the build with the latest date as it is the newest)
        2. Download the Gapps zip file in order to have Google apps
        3. Power off your phone, boot into CWM Recovery by holding Volume up + Home + Power keys simultaneously
        4. Choose wipe data
        5. Choose install zip
        6. Choose choose zip from external sdcard
        7. Choose the rom zip file then choose Yes to confirm
        8. After rom has been installed, again choose choose zip from external sdcard
        9. This time flash the gapps zip file
        10. After you are done, go back and choose reboot system now

We finally get a ported version of the latest rom from the Slim Roms and that is SlimKat - based off the latest Android version 4.4.2 KitKat and developed unofficially by f4k from xda-developers forums.

Just like the Carbon ROM, this particular build also seems to have the bad video preview quality on the camera but the final result is a good looking video with 1080p quality that it's meant to have from the Galaxy S4 mini's camera.

Please do keep in mind that this build is a RC (release candidate) and the Slim team are still working on improvements and implementing more features. When a new version with more features is out and developer f4k has updated us with a newer build, it will be posted.

How to get Air Gestures on Samsung Galaxy S4 mini

As you all may know, the Galaxy S4 mini lacks the Air Gesture features that the Galaxy S4 has due to the fact that it's intended for a different market/price range. This has obviously upset a lot of people but don't worry as you can always find workarounds for this.

        air gestures s4 mini

Your dream of using air gestures on the Galaxy S4 mini has partially come true as developer forgin from xda-developers forums has made this application that can simulate the S4 air gestures. It is called Hovering Controls and is offered for free.

What the app does is, it uses your proximity sensor that you have on the front to perform all these magic tricks. Now you won't only be using that little sensor for making your screen shut off during calls, but for a lot more things.

The app is offered by the developer in two versions - free and paid. You can decide which one you wish to download.

Download Hovering Controls apk - From official forum post attachment
Buy Hovering Controls - From official Play Store page ($1.37)

Once you have downloaded and installed the application to your Galaxy S4 mini, run it and set it as a device administrator as it asks you. Don't worry, it does not collect any personal data nor does it secretly send SMS or make calls to waste your money.

The above video shows you a demonstration of what the application is capable and if all of the features are working on the Galaxy S4 mini. Have fun!

Samsung USA confirms Galaxy S4 mini 4.4 KitKat update

For months we've been getting unofficial lists on the internet regarding which Samsung Galaxy devices will be receiving the Android 4.4 KitKat update and all of us were eagerly waiting to see the S4 mini on the list.

Just a few days ago, Samsung USA decided to make things official and announce which Samsung phones and tablets will begin receiving the 4.4 KitKat update. Without any doubt, the Galaxy S4 mini was once again included in the list.

According to SamMobile, the update has begun rolling out about 4 days ago now and at any moment users could receive a notification for a firmware update available. You can also periodically check for new firmware uploaded at the SamMobile website aswell, if you still haven't received any notifications.

        Press release:

DALLAS, February 18, 2014 – Samsung Telecommunications America (Samsung Mobile) announced today that a number of Samsung Galaxy® devices will receive the Android 4.4.2 (KitKat) software update, enriching the Galaxy experience.
The upgrade provides a number of innovative, easy-to-use features that enhance the user experience, including a more intuitive user interface, enhanced messaging capabilities and updated applications:
        • Location Menu: An integrated location menu enables users to easily activate GPS, Wi-Fi and mobile networks, while simultaneously checking the battery usage of apps running location service capabilities.
        • Enhanced Messaging: Enables users to choose between Messages or Hangouts as their preferred default messaging application, and select from a larger assortment of updated Emoji icons.
        • Upgraded Google Mobile Service™ (GMS) apps: Users can automatically back up photos and video and can open, view, rename and share Google Docs and files.
        Samsung Galaxy U.S. devices currently scheduled to receive the KitKat update include select carrier variants of the Galaxy Note® 3, Galaxy Note® II, Galaxy S® 4, Galaxy S® 4 mini™, Galaxy S® 4 Active™, Galaxy S® 4 zoom™, Galaxy S® III, Galaxy S® III mini™, Galaxy Mega®, Galaxy Light, Galaxy Note® 8.0, Galaxy Tab® 3, Galaxy Note® 10.1, Galaxy Note® 10.1 2014 Edition.
Availability varies by carrier and product, with updates beginning today and continuing throughout the coming months.

If you have seen the leaked Galaxy S4 KitKat firmware, you probably know what to expect on the Galaxy S4 mini. It is likely for the UI to be pretty much the same as the current TouchWiz except for the white statusbar icons and some other minor changes. Still, there is that possibility where the new leaked TouchWiz UI could be included but that's kind of unlikely.

AROMA Installer is a very helpful installation utility that helps developers give users to install their custom roms by choosing specific features they want. e.g. Installing the rom with or without the kernel.

        s4 mini custom recovery

In this case, hanspampel from xda-developers forums has come up with an idea to pack the available custom recoveries for the Galaxy S4 mini into this aroma installer package. So now you can just carry one zip file on your sdcard and you can switch between three custom recoveries on your Galaxy S4 mini.

The latest version available is v0.2 and for now the recoveries and the package itself are meant for the GT-I9195 but hopefully in the future the support will spread to I9190 and I9192.

        Recoveries:

        • PhilZ Advanced CWM
        • Team Win Recovery Project (TWRP)
        • ClockworkMod (CWM)
         Download - Click here.

        3. Now select choose zip from external sdcard
        4. Locate and find the AROMA recovery installer zip file and choose it

If you prefer to use the stock KitKat camera more than the Samsung TouchWiz one, then you can try out this stock KK camera that was recently posted by zilian28 from xda-developers forums.

This one has the Photosphere feature included and if you are wondering about what is working and what is not, everything seems to be working. It can take photos, you can switch to HDR, you can change the exposure value, you can capture videos in 1080p resolution with nice quality even though the preview quality is bad while recording.

Overall, it works just fine. Plus, it does not break your TouchWiz camera, neither does it replace it. You can use both whenever you want.

        Download - Click here.

        Installation:

        1. Boot into Recovery mode
        2. Go to install zip
        3. Now select choose zip from external sdcard
        4. Locate and find the  kkStockCamera zip file and choose it
        5. Now choose Yes to confirm when asked
        6. You should see a new camera and gallery shortcut on your app drawer after rebooting
