Windy Weather LWP APK for Samsung Galaxy S4 mini

$

If you've used a Samsung Galaxy S2 or Galaxy S3, you might remember the neat weather live wallpaper it had included. It's basically a live wallpaper of a field with windmills whose background changes depending on your weather condition. The wallpaper is called "Windy Weather".

windy weather apk

It supports sunny day, night, rain, snow, storm, etc, and it manages to work just fine on the Galaxy S4 mini and I suppose for other devices as well.

Now you get to download two variants; S2's or the S3's. What is the difference between the two variants you ask? Both have advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages and disadvantages:

S2's:
Disadvantage: The windmills do not appear fully on the main page that you are in, making it look a bit cut-out and ugly. Plus, you get the Accuweather watermark on the top left corner of the page. (That can easily be removed).
Advantage: The settings are accessible and you can change the update interval.

S3's:
Disadvantage: You cannot open the LWP's settings and change update interval
Advantage: It has better quality than the S2's and the windmills are more centered into the main page making it look fantastic.

Download Galaxy S2's - Click here.
Download Galaxy S3's - Click here.

Installation:

  1. Download the APK file to your sdcard
  2. Using a root browsing tool such as ES File Explorer, Root Explorer, etc, move the file to /system/app/
  3. Change the permissions to rw--r--r--
  4. Reboot your phone. You should then see a message that Android is upgrading. Be patient for 5 or 6 seconds.
  5. After the phone starts up, go to your Live Wallpapers and inside there you should find the Windy Weather LWP.

If you are not satisfied with any of the two variants above, then you can try this other alternative application called 3D Weather Live Wallpaper - Play Store.

How to use custom boot animations on Samsung Galaxy S4 mini

Ever stumbled upon a cool boot animation on your friend's device or on the internet? If you are also bored of your stock SAMSUNG logo boot animation and want to use something different, this guide will show you how.

stock samsung boot animation

It's actually very easy and it only takes less than three minutes to achieve this. You basically need to pick a boot animation that you like from the web (they are posted everywhere; blogs, forums, etc). After you have chosen your desired boot animation, you first need to enable it to work on your Galaxy S4 mini.

Enabling custom boot animations on Galaxy S4 mini:

In order to get your custom boot animation to appear upon booting, you do not only need to paste a file to your system partition to get it to work. You first need to enable it. For this, you basically need to flash a zip file that will replace your default bootanimation file that is inside your system partition with a modified one that is instructed to load the animation from another file.

Download Boot Animation Enabler - Click here.
This enabler zip file has been created by anbech from xda-developers forums.

Now once you have downloaded the enabler zip file to your sdcard, follow the below instructions:
  1. Boot into CWM Recovery
  2. Go to install zip
  3. Then select choose zip from external sdcard
  4. Now locate the enabler zip file and choose it
  5. Choose Yes when asked
  6. After flashing is complete, press the back button to go the main menu and select reboot system now
That is all. You may notice that on upon rebooting, you no longer have the SAMSUNG logo boot animation but a different animation that says android.

Installing your desired custom boot animation:

Now that you have enabled custom boot animations, it is time to use your new one. As already mentioned above, you can find some neat boot animations on various blogs and forums. It is recommended that you look for qHD (540x960) ones for the best results. The boot animations are always packed inside a file called bootanimation.zip file. This file contains all of the animations' frames into images and also contains one small configuration file on how it should work.

One boot animation that you could try out is the Android KitKat by PIKO1982 from xda-developers forums. You can find it in this post.

After you have downloaded your desired bootanimation.zip to your sdcard, follow the below steps:
  1. Open up a root browsing tool such as Root Explorer, ES File Explorer and head into your sdcard partition.
  2. Select and choose to copy/move the bootanimation.zip file.
  3. Copy/Move the bootanimation.zip file to the directory /system/app/ (if it says the partition is read-only, mount it R/W)
  4. After you have pasted the file, you now need to change its permissions. The location of this option varies by the tool you are using.
  5. Set the permissions to rw-r--r-- (also known as 644)
Here is an image demonstrating on which boxes need to be check and which ones need to be unchecked:

Once you have performed all of the above steps correctly, it is finally time to reboot your phone and check out your awesome new boot animation.

If you are having a hard time following the instructions on this post, you can check out the above steps performed in this video:

If you ever wish to disable this, simply flash this disabler zip file and you will be back to your old SAMSUNG logo animation.

How to update CWM Recovery to 6.0.4.6 on Galaxy S4 mini

$
0
0
Those of you who have followed the rooting guide found in this blog are using the CWM Recovery v6.0.3.3 which is now kind of considered an outdated version.

CWM Recovery v6.0.3.3 is working just fine. You can wipe, you can flash, you can create and restore backups, etc. However, being up to date is always better.

People who often flash custom roms, stock roms, kernels and do other tasks through Odin will find this to be a piece of cake. Keep in mind that this post is more centered towards novice Galaxy S4 mini users.

Disclaimer:

Following the guide in this post incorrectly can lead to you bricking your device. S4MiniArchive will not be responsible for any damages done to your device.

Pre-requisites:

PC and USB cable
Samsung USB drivers installed
Odin 3.07 or 3.09 - Click here to download.
CWM Recovery v6.0.4.6 for I9190 - Click here.
CWM Recovery v6.0.4.6 for I9192 - Click here.
CWM Recovery v6.0.4.6 for I9195 - Click here.

Updating to CWM 6.0.4.6:

Step 1:
Download the Odin 3.09 package from the link above to your computer and extract it. Then download the appropriate CWM Recovery for your phone model to your computer. Do NOT extract the CWM Recovery file, leave it as it is.

P.S. Do not mind the filename shown in the screenshots. Yours will be different depending on your model. For this tutorial, the I9195 CWM variant has been used as an example.

Step 2:
Power off your Galaxy S4 mini and boot into Download mode by holding Volume down + Home + Power buttons simultaneously. Start up the Odin program on your PC and then connect your phone to your computer while in Download mode and press the Volume up button.

Step 3:
At this point, your computer and Odin should recognize your phone. You can verify that by taking a look at one of the boxes just below where it says "ID:COM". Now click on the PDA button and locate the downloaded CWM Recovery file:

Step 4:
After you have located and chosen the file, wait for a second or two while Odin does an MD5 check of the file. Once it says "<OSM> Checking MD5 finished Sucessfully.." you are ready to click on the Start button. Click the Start button and wait again for a second or two.

Step 5:
At this point, your Galaxy S4 mini should reboot, and you should get the message "<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 1 / failed 0)" as well as a green box saying PASS!

Now power off your phone once again, hold the Volume up + Home + Power buttons simultaneously and you should be in the new CWM Recovery v6.0.4.6

Since the release of the Samsung Galaxy S5, many people may have fallen in love with some of the UI changes. Considering its specs and hardware, it might not be offered for a cheap price. So if you want to get the same Quick Setting toggle buttons on your Galaxy S4 mini, please continue on reading this post.

S5 quick settings on galaxy s4 mini

The mod which you are going to see in this post was originally meant for the Galaxy S3 made by decalman from xda-developers forums. Since both phones are pretty much the same in terms of software, flashing the zip file on the Galaxy S4 mini worked flawlessly. The only touches required to make it work was to change one folder name.

The results ended up great. The image quality is perfect, the size is good, they do not appear resized, stretched out or pixelated. See for yourself in these two screenshots:

In order to get the exact same look as shown in the screenshots above, you would also need to have the Xposed framework installed as well as the Wanam Xposed module to apply some color changes to your notification tray. The instructions on installing Xposed framework and setting up Wanam Xposed can be found in this post.

Download - Click here.

Installation:

  1. Download the zip file to your sdcard
  2. Boot into CWM Recovery by holding Volume up + Home + Power buttons simultaneously
  3. Go to install zip
  4. Choose choose zip from external sdcard
  5. Locate and find the S5_Toggles.zip file and choose it
  6. Choose Yes when asked
  7. After flashing is complete, go back and choose reboot system now
  8. Since this wipes dalvik cache, boot will take a little longer so be patient
  9. After your phone boots up, follow the instructions in the video below to get the complete look as shown in the screenshots above

If you have already flashed the S5 Quick Settings theme on your Galaxy S4 mini and are eagerly waiting for the rest of the transformation, here comes the next part - the Galaxy S5/Note Pro flat TouchWiz icons.

s5 theme s4 minis5 theme s4 mini

Just like the S5 Quick Settings theme, this icon pack was also meant for the Galaxy S3 except this time made by Kik0o from xda-developers forums. It required quite a lot of directory naming to make it compatible with the Galaxy S4 mini because of the two phones' different resolutions.

The converting is finally finished and you can now flash these flat TouchWiz icons on your Galaxy S4 mini and enjoy the new look.

Download flat TouchWiz icon pack - Click here.

Installation:

  1. Download the zip file to your sdcard
  2. Boot into CWM Recovery by holding Volume up + Home + Power buttons simultaneously
  3. Go to install zip
  4. Choose choose zip from external sdcard (choose zip from /storage/sdcard1/ for newer  recoveries)
  5. Locate and find the icons zip file and choose it
  6. Choose Yes when asked
  7. After flashing is complete, go back and choose reboot system now

So here is the last part of the complete S5/Note Pro transformation for your Samsung Galaxy S4 mini. If you have already flashed the S5 Quick Settings, the flat TouchWiz icons, the last part is the overall themed UI.

This theme was originally released for the Galaxy S3 by Kik0o from xda-developers forums and just like on the Quick Settings and flat TouchWiz icons packages, this one required a bit of modding to get it to work. Please keep in mind that this is version 1 for the S4 mini and there might be some icon size issues and some small overlapping issues which will be fixed in the near future.

One of the most noticable issues for now are the huge toggle buttons which are located inside the Settings application and the statusbar icons. I promise you, these icons will be re-sized and fixed in the next version.

Download S5/Note Pro theme for Galaxy S4 mini - Click here.

Installation:

  1. Download the zip file to your sdcard
  2. Boot into CWM Recovery by holding Volume up + Home + Power buttons simultaneously
  3. Go to install zip
  4. Choose choose zip from external sdcard (choose zip from /storage/sdcard1/ for newer  recoveries)
  5. Locate and find the s5 theme zip file and choose it
  6. Choose Yes when asked
  7. After flashing is complete, go back and choose reboot system now
  8. Since this wipes dalvik cache, the first boot will take a little longer so be patient
Please report any problems that you find such as icons being too big or being cut-out as well as overlapping.

MoKee ROM (Android 4.4.2) for Galaxy S4 mini 3G and LTE (I9190 & I9195)

It's been quite a while since a new rom has been posted. Today I present to you MoKee ROM. This is another aftermarket firmware based off the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) just like CyanogenMod, Paranoid, PAC, etc.

The rom is well known for its outstanding performance, feature rich and best of all, multi-window mode. Unfortunately there is no stable version available for our Galaxy S4 mini for now as the rom is still in nightly stage. But the good thing is that it has official support from the original MoKee developers and gets to receive daily updates.

After personally trying out the rom for a bit, I can say that this is a very good rom in terms of performance and features. What currently kills the joy are the small bugs that are present. By small bugs I'm not talking not being able to use the rom for daily use, but small issues that may occur from time to time.

Features:

  • Odexed for faster performance (only in official releases, nightlies are deodexed)
  • Incremental updates
  • OTA updates - update on the fly!
  • Native exFAT support (Samsung devices only)
  • ListView animations
  • Multi window
  • Calendar - with lunar and solar calenders
  • Lunar calendar in lock screen
  • Task switching sidebar in recent apps (the list will increase if you install supported apps)
  • Bulk SMS recipients
  • Adjustable SMS font size
  • SMS sending delay
  • Smart dialing
  • Speed dialing
  • IP dialing
  • Custom carrier name
  • Network speed in status bar (upload and download!)
  • Built in timer in Apollo - determine when to stop playing music
  • MoKee Setup Wizard
  • Active Display
  • HALO
  • Adjustable navigation bar height
  • Unique Power Saver functions!
  • Custom screen off animations
Download - for I9190 | for I9195
Download Gapps - Click here.

Be sure to download the latest nightly for your device!
P.S. Do not download the build from 14th March as it is possible you may get stuck on the bootlogo! Download the build from 13th and wait for a newer build before you update again!

Installation:

  1. Download the build according to your model and the gapps package to your sdcard
  2. Turn off your phone and hold the Volume up + Home + Power buttons together to boot into
  3. Recovery mode.
  4. Select wipe data/factory reset
  5. Go to mounts and storage and format /system then mount it

  7. Select choose zip from external sdcard (in the latest CWM recovery it is choose zip from /storage/sdcard1)
  8. Locate and choose the rom zip file

How to get MultiWindow feature on Galaxy S4 mini

The Multiwindow is yet another feature that Samsung took away from the Galaxy S4 mini possibly due to the fact that it is intended for a different market/price range. The same reason why most of the air gestures the Galaxy S4 offers have been removed as well.

multiwindow galaxy s4 mini

However, users can use a similar Multiwindow feature thanks to a module that is available for the Xposed Framework. For those of you who are wondering what this Xposed Framework represents, you may check out this blog post explaining how you can install it on your Galaxy S4 mini.

This module was made by a person with the nickname LovewuChin and was tested on the Galaxy S4 mini by a member from our forums, Kumail Hyder. This is not exactly the same as the one the Galaxy S4 offers but it's similar and most importantly, gets the job done.

Pre-requisites:

  • Your phone must be rooted.
  • You need to have Xposed Framework installed on your phone. See the above post for reference.
  • You need to download the XMultiWindow module (do this after you have installed Xposed Framework) - Download XMultiWindow

Instructions:

You may watch the below video with instructions on how to setup the module and configure it to work on your Galaxy S4 mini.

How to Reverse Tether on Samsung Galaxy S4 mini

$

A while ago, I was asked by a visitor if it is possible to reverse tether internet into the Galaxy S4 mini through your computer and the answer is yes, it is.

In this tutorial we will be using a Windows tool made by xda member capslock66 that will allow us to use our computer's connection on the Galaxy S4 mini. This is perfect for those of you who wish to save up on bandwidth and may not have a router at home, but wish to update your Play Store applications or do other misellaneous tasks.

Pre-requisites

  • You must have a rooted phone
  • You need to have your USB cable
  • You need to enable USB Debugging
  • You must be running the Windows operating system on your computer
  • Download this package to your computer and extract it.

Reverse Tethering on Galaxy S4 mini:

After you have downloaded the package from the link in pre-requisites and have extracted it, connect your Galaxy S4 mini to your computer and transfer the Tracetool service.apk file to your sd card or phone storage, then install it.

Now that you have installed the app, run it and connect your Galaxy S4 mini to your computer. You may get a little popup asking to allow USB Debugging, tap on OK.

Now on your Windows PC, run the AndroidTool program (It is prefered to right-click and choose Run as administrator for Windows Vista users and above).

If you have done everything correctly, on the top where it says "Select a device" you should see digits and the word device at the end.

Just in case, click on the Refresh button next to it to make sure you won't have any problems and finally, click on Connect. At this point, you may get a Superuser access prompt on your phone so allow it. The text on the app should then change to "Service is running. Connected!"

That's pretty much it, you should now have internet access on your phone while your mobile data and WiFi is turned off.

How to disable KNOX Notifications on Galaxy S4 mini

      $
      0
      0
As you all may know, Samsung KNOX is a security feature that is offered with certain Samsung devices and the Galaxy S4 mini is one of them. The feature helps you to securely separate your personal and professional data and this is obviously a good thing.

But if you decide that you want to root your Galaxy S4 mini, you will then begin receiving security notifications from Samsung's KNOX service that an application has "attempted to access your system on your device without authorisation" such as the one shown in the sample screenshot below.

This is where the application KNOX Disabler comes to help. The app will basically disable the notifications with a tap of a button. At any time you can also re-enable notifications if for whatever reason you need them again . This disabler app was developed by xda member -viperboy- and is offered completely free.

The only requirements for this app is to have root access, and this is the only reason I am guessing why you would want to use it anyway.

Download KNOX Disabler - Click here.

Once you have downloaded the apk file to your phone, find it and install it. You will get the app shortcut in your drawer. Run the app and simply tap on Disable. You will get a Superuser access prompt, be sure to choose Grant, wait a few seconds and it should say Success!

An alternative way to get rid of the KNOX service completely is to use a root browsing tool such as Root Explorer or Root Browser, head into /system/app/ and delete all .apk and .odex files which contain the word KNOX in their name.

If you have always found the background of the Galaxy S4 mini's Accuweather widget annoying and taking up a lot of space for your wallpaper, worry no more as xda member SilviuMik has shared his transparent widget.

      transparent accu weather

Now there are two variants of transparent. One can be where the background is completely gone and all you see is the sun, clouds, temperature, time and location over your homescreen's wallpaper. The other variant is to have the background's opacity set to 50% or even a little less which will result in seeing a bit of the widget's background and under it, a dim look of your homescreen's wallpaper.

The only available variant for now is this one which has the background completely transparent.

      Download widget - Click here.

      Installation:

      1. Download the apk file to your sdcard or phone's storage
      2. Using a root browsing tool such as Root Explorer, Root Browser or ES File Explorer, navigate to where you saved the apk file and copy it.
      3. Go to /system/app/ and paste the apk file in there.
      4. Long-press on the apk file there and choose Permissions, then set them to rw-r--r--.
      5. Delete your accuweather widget's .odex file.
      6. Reboot your phone.
      7. Enjoy your new transparent widget.
If you are having trouble setting this up, then you may check out the video below for a live example of how to perform the instructions and a preview of the final result.

Last year I shared with you another deodexed and pre-rooted stock rom for the GT-I9195 variant. Considering its release date, it is using quite an old firmware build from Samsung. This stock deodexed and pre-rooted firmware is based off ML1 and offers pretty much the same features as the one posted last year, except it is based off a newer firmware build.

        s4 mini stock rom

The rom was modded by xda member ladislav.heller and appears to be working just fine on the phone. It is the perfect solution for those seeking to deodex their stock rom. It also comes pre-rooted as already mentioned above and uses the custom kernel Vikinger as well as an application that gives you the ability to change your CSC. In a few words, it's a total time saver.

        Features:

        • Deodexed
        • Rooted
        • Vikinger kernel included with BLN support.
        • KNOX free
        • Based off BML1
        Download ROM - Click here.
Download XXUMBL1 Modem (optional) - Click here.

        Installation:

        1. Download the ROM zip file to your sdcard.
        2. Boot into Recovery mode (it has to be a custom recovery such as CWM or TWRP).
        3. Choose wipe data/factory reset (optional, but recommended!).
        4. Choose install zip.
        5. Now select choose zip from /storage/sdcard/1/ (choose zip from external sdcard in older recoveries).
        6. Locate the rom zip file and choose it.
        7. Choose Yes to confirm.
        8. After installation is complete, go back to the main menu and choose reboot system now.
        9. Download this to install Busybox. Then download this to active init.d support (requires that you have busybox installed first).

Hotfix for NFC not turning on

In case your NFC refuses to turn on, you may try renaming the file nfc_nci.MSM8960.so which is located under /system/lib/hw/ to nfc_nci.msm8960.so
Basically you need to change all the upper case letters to lower case then reboot your phone. If that doesn't resolve the issue, then you may download this zip file, extract it, and replace your .so file with the one from the extracted zip, then reboot.

If you are having trouble installing the rom by following the instructions above, then you may watch the video below which shows how to install it, followed by a quick overview and installation of init.d support.

        Enhanced Kernel for Galaxy S4 mini (GT-I9195 / I257M)

        $
        0
        0
Here is a custom kernel developed by xda member rob43 with minimal features and the best of all are some inique gestures which you may have seen on other big smartphones.

It is based off the stock kernel's source SGH-I257M_NA_JB_Opensource_Update1 but regardless of the SGH-I257M label it manages to function just fine on the GT-I9195 since both are pretty much alike.

The most notable features of this kernel are some of the gestures such as sweep2sleep, sweep2wake, doubletap2wake and fast charge. Please note that the doubletap2wake feature is still considered experimental and may not work fully as expected.

        Features:

        • SELinux permissive mode
        • Undervolt (default on for lower frequencies)
        • Fast charge
        • Max screen off frequency (default on @ 702mhz)
        • Sweep2sleep (default on, swipe from right-to-left at the bottom of the screen to turn off)
          Download kernel - Click here.

Be sure to download the latest kernel found in that directory. As of now the latest one is Minikernel-2. If there is already a 3, 4 or above available then be sure to download that.

          Installation:

          1. Download the zip file to your sdcard
          2. Boot into Recovery mode by holding Volume up + Home + Power buttons simultaneously
          3. In recovery mode, choose install zip
          4. Then choose choose zip from external sdcard (it is labeled choose zip from /storage/sdcard/1 in newer versions of CWM recovery)
          5. Find the kernel zip file and choose it
          6. Now choose Yes to confirm
          7. After flashing is complete, go back and choose reboot system now

          Using the features:

In order to toggle on/off the features such as doubletap2wake, sweep2take, sweep2sleep and others, you must download the app called Terminal Emulator which can be found in the Play Store for free.

Below you can find all of the commands that you can type into the Terminal Emulator and other information to operate the kernel. Before you begin typing any of the below commands, be sure to first type in su and grant the app Superuser access.

          Fast charge:

          echo 1 > /sys/kernel/fast_charge/force_fast_charge - to turn on
          echo 0 > /sys/kernel/fast_charge/force_fast_charge - to turn off

          Undervolt:

Use Trickster Mod or look in /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/vdd_levels

          Max screen off frequency:

          echo 1 > /sys/kernel/screen_limit/enable - to turn on
          echo 0 > /sys/kernel/screen_limit/enable - to turn off
          echo FREQUENCY > /sys/kernel/screen_limit/max_frequency

          Valid frequencies for S4 Mini:

          384000 486000 594000 702000 810000 918000 1026000 1134000 1242000 1350000 1458000 1566000 1674000 1728000

          Sweep2sleep:

          echo 1 > /sys/power_actions/mode - to turn on
          echo 0 > /sys/power_actions/mode - to turn off

          Sweep2wake, doubletap2wake (experimental!)

          echo 2 > /sys/power_actions/mode - sweep2wake only
          echo 3 > /sys/power_actions/mode - sweep2sleep, sweep2wake
          echo 4 > /sys/power_actions/mode - doubletap2wake only
          echo 5 > /sys/power_actions/mode - sweep2sleep, doubletap2wake
